Industrial Printing Machine Electronics Repair: Heidelberg, Roland, Komori, KBA, Goss

Modern offset and digital printing machines are packed with proprietary electronics: servo drives, ink management controllers, colour registration systems, and CIP4 interfaces. We repair them all — without waiting months for OEM spares.

The Hidden Complexity of Modern Printing Machine Electronics

A modern Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 106 or Roland 700 Evolution press contains hundreds of individual electronic assemblies: axis servo drives for impression cylinders, ink ductor motor controllers, feeder and delivery system drives, colour register measurement systems, dampening system controllers, and a central press management computer running JDF/JMF workflows. When any of these assemblies fails, the press stops — and in commercial printing, a stopped press costs €500–5,000 per hour depending on the job in press.

Printing Machines We Service

Heidelberg Druckmaschinen

Heidelberg is the dominant brand in sheet-fed offset printing. We repair electronics across the entire range:

  • Speedmaster SX 52 / SX 74 / SX 102 / SX 162: Servo drive boards, ink zone motor controller modules, AirTransfer system control PCBs, pile-height sensor electronics
  • Speedmaster XL 75 / XL 106 / XL 145 / XL 162: InPress Control colour measurement system electronics, DriveTronic SIS feeder servo control, AutoPlate plate change controller PCBs
  • CD 74 / PM 74 / SM 102: Older press electronics including Heidelberg-specific CAN bus interface modules, axis controller cards, power supply assemblies
  • Anicolor units: Short-inking system servo controllers, viscosity sensing electronics
  • CPC 1.04 / CP2000 / Prinect press consoles: Main press controller boards, video colour measurement PCBs, Ethernet interface modules

Roland (Manroland Sheetfed)

Manroland Roland presses are the second most common in European printing plants:

  • Roland 200 / 300 / 500 / 700 / 900: Form roller servo drives, ink fountain motor controllers, automatic pile changer electronics, register control boards
  • Roland 700 Evolution / 900 Evolution: DirectDrive servo system for impression cylinder (no gears), inline quality control camera system electronics, LED-UV curing system controllers
  • Roland R700 / R900 UV: UV lamp ballast electronics, power factor correction units, UV output control boards

Komori (Komori Corporation)

Komori presses are widely used in Japan, Southeast Asia, and increasingly in Europe:

  • Lithrone S26 / S29 / S40 / S44: Main drive inverter, ink key motor control PCBs, pile sensor electronics, KHS-AI intelligent inking system control boards
  • Lithrone GX40 / LS40: Servo amplifier boards for perfecting mechanism, feeder control electronics, PDC-S colour density control system
  • Impremia IS29 / NS40 inkjet: Inkjet head driver electronics, ink supply pressure control boards, UV/LED curing system inverters

KBA (Koenig & Bauer)

  • Rapida 75 / 106 / 130 / 145 / 164: FAPC (Full Automatic Plate Changer) servo controller, ErgoTronic register control, DensiTronic density measurement electronics, Qualitronic inline camera system
  • Commander / Compacta web presses: Folder drive electronics, web tension control servo boards, ink flow computer interfaces
  • RotaJET inkjet: Print head driver array boards, high-voltage ink circulation system electronics

Goss International (web offset)

  • Goss Community / Universal / Sunday presses: Web tension drive systems, folder jaw drive electronics, ink rail motor controllers, impression throw-off system
  • Goss M600 / Sunday 2000: High-speed web press servo amplifiers, registration control boards, automated color control system electronics

Other Brands

We also repair electronics from: MAN Roland web presses, Ryobi offset presses, Mitsubishi Diamond series, Sakurai presses, RMGT (Ryobi MHI Graphic Technology), Fujifilm Jet Press inkjet systems, and Xerox iGen / HP Indigo digital press drive electronics.

Most Common Printing Press Electronic Failures

Servo Drive / Axis Amplifier Failure

Printing presses use servo drives for precise angular positioning of cylinders (impression, transfer, blanket). A failed servo amplifier causes register errors first, then press stop on fault. Common brands used: Bosch Rexroth IndraDrive, Siemens SIMODRIVE 611, Parker Compax3, Beckhoff AX5000. We repair all of these at board level and stock common spare parts.

Ink Zone Motor Controller Failure

Sheet-fed presses use 32–64 individually controlled ink zone motors per inking unit. These small stepper or DC motor controllers fail due to brush residue contamination, moisture, and vibration. Full replacement of an ink zone control board often costs €800–2,000 per zone from OEM. We repair at board level for €150–400 per board.

CAN Bus Interface Module Failure

Modern presses use CAN bus or Profibus for inter-module communication. A failed CAN bus interface card prevents an entire press section from communicating. Since these are often press-specific designs, OEM lead times of 8–20 weeks are common. We repair and reverse-engineer replacements where OEM parts are no longer available.

Power Supply Assembly Failure

Switching power supplies in printing presses serve critical functions: 5V for logic, 24V for solenoids and sensors, ±15V for analog circuits. Failure causes partial or complete press shutdown. We repair all common industrial SMPS designs including those from Lambda, Puls, Murrelektronik, and press-specific OEM units.

Data and Parameter Retention

One critical concern in printing press repairs is retention of press-specific calibration data, ink key profiles, and register compensation tables stored in controller memory. Before any repair, we image all memory devices where accessible and return all calibration data intact — preventing the need for lengthy press re-calibration after repair.

Our Approach to Obsolete Printing Press Parts

Printing machines remain in service for 20–40 years. We frequently repair assemblies from presses manufactured in the 1990s and early 2000s where OEM support has ended. We maintain a stock of period-correct components including vintage IGBT modules, legacy CAN transceivers, obsolete EEPROM types, and older-generation microcontrollers.
